Site - Iron and Moncorvo Regional Museum, Torre de Moncorvo

In the region of Moncorvo is one of the largest iron mineral deposits in all of Europe; magnetite and hematite, predominantly. This mineral wealth had been exploited since Roman times, and although there were some intermissions, this mining exploitation continued until the end of the 18th century, accompanied by metal working and casting works. Large scale extraction, envisioned since the 19th century, only became a reality with the establishment of Ferrominas, occurring between 1951 and the 1980´s during the 20th century. In order to testify in regards to this long history, and frame it as part of the local reality (Archaeology, Ethnography, Building Heritage), the Iron and Moncorvo Region Museum was established. Currently this museum is located in the Historical Downtown of the Moncorvo Torre, next to the Igreja Matriz (National Monument).
