Mining complex installed during the 19th century for the exploration of a copper pyrite mine, which deposit was explored in both the Roman and Pre-Roman time periods. The main elements extracted during modern exploration, between 1854 and 1966, were copper and sulphur. Includes the urban zones of Mina de São Domingos, Moitinha, Achada do Gamo and Pomerão, the extraction zone in the São Domingos Mine, industrial zones in Mina de São Domingos, Moitinha, Achada do Gamo, the Mina-Pomerão iron trail with stations and special works (tunnels and bridges), the Pomarão fluvial port and Palanqueira (right hand margin of the Guadiana), two fresh water reservoirs in Mina de São Domingos, designed to provide for wet metal working and a acidic water reservoir and channel system for the management of metal working waste. After the closure of the mine the equipment was disassembled and sold, and today the landscape is marked by the mining activity and by acidic drainage.
