Covões da Ametade and Albergaria (Geosite), Manteigas
These are glacial overdeepenings in the Zêzere valley, filled by post-glacial deposition and used in the past for agriculture and shepherding. These sites demonstrate the erosive capacity of the glacier, which originated poorly drained basins, being also a typical example of glaciated mountain areas. Unlike the glacial cirques, these overdeepenings have poorly developed backwalls, the same happening with the riegel. In these poorly drained areas the development of peat often occurs. These soils of very dark colour are manly composed of organic matter, whose characteristics allow the conservation of the accumulated vegetation residuum. This allows reconstructing the occupation / use of these sites through pollen studies or other techniques.
