Fragão do Corvo panorama (Geosite), Manteigas

The Fragão do Corvo panorama is located on a tor at an altitude of about 1440 m. Its genesis is linked to the erosion of clays and sands from the deep weathering of granite, which caused the outcropping of fresh and hard core stones. The boulders are controlled by the joint patterns of the bedrock, which gave origin to geometric landforms. The initial stage of granite deep weathering has occurred a few tens of million years ago, under a warm and wet climate, followed by a stage where erosion prevails when compared to weathering rates, triggered by the tectonic uplift of the Estrela and formation of the valleys. From the Fragão do Corvo panorama one can observe Fraga da Cruz, to the South, the village of Manteigas, to the East, and areas of agriculture, such as Campo Romão, in the foreground, and Casais de Folgosinho in the background, to the NE. This is a privileged place to understand the main morphological units of the Estrela Geopark. In the horizon, the city of Guarda is also visible, situated in the transition between the Iberian Central System (Cordilheira Central in Portugal) and the Iberian Meseta that extends to Spain.
