Between the glacial cirque of Covão do Ferro, the Zêzere glacial valley and the Cântaro Raso, the Covão do Boi, located at 1840 meters a.s.l., appears. In this geosite we find a set of granite columns, with diameters of 2 to 5 meters and between 4 and 8 meters in height, constituting a rare set of landforms at the international level, making this geosite especially relevant. Before they surfaced, the granite columns were already shaped under the surface due to the deep weathering of the granite, which formed a thick sand, gravel and clay weathering mantle between them. During the glaciation, the bottom of the Covão do Boi valley stood at the top of the columns, which were then cut by glacial erosion. Only after the glacial melting, with the erosion of the weathering mantle, did the columns began to appear on the surface, which makes their genesis particularly significant, since they occur inside the glaciated area. These granite columns are locally called cheese-piles, because they resemble, in a nutshell, the form of a pile of typical Serra da Estrela cheeses.
