The Iron and Moncorvo Regional Museum is a museum and cultural institution destined for the promotion of knowledge and awareness regarding the archaeological and mining heritage of the territory, the villages and the communities which formed in the Serra do Roboredo [Roboredo Mountains] region and the Vale da Vilariça [Vilariça Valley]. There is a special focus on those activities related to Iron exploitation. The museum possesses a reception hall ("Knowledge Workshop") where an introductory presentation about the region is provided, and during which the main geomorphological accidents which characterise the location are presented: the Vale da Vilariça [Vilariça Valley] and the Serra do Roboredo [Roboredo Mountains]. In the Iron Room an introduction to minerals and iron metallurgy is given with a special focus on the region. It is divided into the following sections: Forges, Blacksmiths, Metalworkers; Geology and Mines; The origins of the Iron Industry; The impact of the Industrial Revolution on Portugal; Mining History of Ferrominas (1951-1992). In addition to iron-related subject matter, the Museum also offers a reserved collection of archaeology from the region. In the back of the museum is an ample orchard-garden, organised in terraces and ending in a lawn where the auditorium is located. Here exhibitions, lectures and other cultural events are held.
