The marl and limestone in the Maceira-Liz Factory quarries date back to the Jurassic Period. The paleontological heritage of the quarries largely consists of marine cephalopod fossils which emerge from the area of the stones which were covered with water during the Jurassic Period. The objective of the garden is to reconstruct a past of more than 150 million years, gathering a small collection of amonnite fossils and ichnofossils from marine environments and showing some of the flora from the Jurassic Period. The Jurassic flora was essentially comprised of Gimnosperms (plants without flowers) which diminished in quantity during the Cretaceous Period as the Angiosperms (flowering plants) increased in quantity. This new balance persists through current times. Thus, present in the Jurassic garden are plants such as cycads, araucaria, ginko, junipers, yews and equisetum considered as "living fossils".
