Lagoa Comprida (Geosite), Seia
This is one of the geosites that best exemplifies glacial erosion in the Serra da Estrela, with glacial polished surfaces, erratic boulder fields, roches moutounnées, and glacial striations, still well observed in the landscape around Lagoa Comprida today. Besides this evidences, it is possible to identify one of the largest fields of glacial erratics in Portugal. The erratic boulders at the Lagoa Comprida show generally metric diameter and different rock characteristics from the bedrock, evidencing their transport by the glacial ice. These boulders can be particularly useful for the study of past glacier flow, since their rock type can help identify the location from which they were eroded, and consequently, the direction of movement of the ancient glacier.
