Home / Estrela UNESCO Global Geopark / Metassediments of Quinta da Taberna (Geosite), Guarda
The geology of Quinta da Taberna and its surroundings is characterized by the presence of ancient sedimentary rocks that underwent metamorphism, becoming metasedimentary rocks, with outcrops showing intercalations of schists and greywackes. Subject to high pressure and temperatures at depth (metamorphism), these rocks were gradually deformed and modified, currently outcropping due to tectonic movements and to erosion. Some places, show folds that resemble a roof tile. The rocks of this geosite are very old, exceeding 540 million years, making them one of the oldest of the Estrela Geopark.
