Olhos de Água do Alviela Walking Trail, Alcanena

The complex also presents a walking trail of approximately 2km that takes visitors past many different and typical karsic geological phenomena of rare beauty. One of these attractions is the Amiais stream. This unique stream flows at the surface throughout hundreds of meters, suddenly disappearing into the ground forming an interesting geological phenomenon known as a Swallow Hole. While deep underground, water then passes through 200 meters of underground hidden galleries resurfacing at the Lapa da Canada. During this underground journey it gorges past different levels of galleries concealed within the limestone plates. After upwelling, water runs down the Fluvio Karsic Canyon: a valley with sharp and steep cliffs molded by millions of years of water erosion. It is in this complex system of caves that lays a very important breeding habitat for 12 different species of cave bats.
