The Ponsul’s Fault is a large tectonic structure, a scar that crosses the territory of the Naturtejo Geopark, from Termas de Monfortinho to Nisa. Its origin dates back around 300 million years ago, when the continents were approaching to form Pangea. The enormous tensions led to a rupture of the earth''s surface materials that made them move horizontally. Later, about 10 million years ago, the Ponsul’s Fault started to move again, this time vertically, lifting one of the blocks and forming a large escarpment, the Ponsul Fault Scarp. This gigantic step in the landscape, which reaches 150 m, separates the plateau on which Idanha-a-Nova is located from the region of the meadow.
