Miner´s House - Documentation Centre, Mina de São Domingos

The Miner´s House - Documentation Centre is the first permanent exhibition of the Sao Domingos Mine Museum. Its construction was the initial contribution to the reconstruction and recovery of the mining village. The location is used for two purposes: as a museum, with the recreation of the Mining House, and preservation of memories through the installation of the Documentation Centre. The Miner´s House demonstrates the physical reality of the living space occupied by a mining family. The objects, memories, symbols and the needs are represented herein. Above all its intent is to provoke the imagination and sensitivity of the visitor such that through a simple exercise, each one may seek to understand the day to day life of a family in an area measuring 16m2. In this reconstruction of the "Miner´s House" the main concern was to recreate the space in which the older residents could remember, the younger ones could learn important lessons, and the visitors passing through could obtain an idea about family life within the 16m2. The Documentation Centre is a place of gathering, archives, study and treatment of all types of documentation (photographic, documental, material) that the mining community had available for contribution to help reconstruct the remains of the memory of 150 years of history of the Sao Domingos Mine industrial complex.
