Railway and Metalworking Workshops, Mina de São Domingos

The maintenance of all railway and industrial equipment needed by the mine was conducted in workshops. Maintenance work was conducted in accordance with production work, both in terms of replacement of worn parts and components as well as for the development of new equipment. Two of the locomotives used in the Sao Domingos Mine Railway System were built in these workshops and one of these was designed by the first Technical Director of Mason & Barry, James Mason. In addition to the railway workshops, the workshops also had specialised areas and personnel working with iron, copper, brass and other materials, which included blacksmiths, foundry operators, copper and iron boilermakers, castors, etc..
